Cradle of the Champions

As I write this as my last entry for this blog, I feel extremely emotional as I reflect on my first days as a Maxwellian. Let us start at the beginning.      My emotions were mixed when the roster of Grade 10 students in their respective sections was released to the general public. I was a Maxwellian. I felt surprised and glad, and at some parts, I felt uneasy and nervous, for our sections were shifted and mixed with the other section already after becoming classmates for three years, and it was a hassle for me to meet and get to know my new classmates again.      Group chats were created, messages were exchanged, and greetings were shared with each and every one of us, expressing their utmost happiness and pleasure as they were also excited about the fact that we had new classmates, or maybe the classes were back to their original setup as they were before the pandemic struck.      Fast forward to the first day; it was no...

May the Odds Ever Be in Our Favor

D reaming and expecting what you will be in the next ten years may sound nuts now that we are still in our adolescent years. Some may say, "Enjoy your childhood; you will never be young again when you turn old and wrinkled", or "Don't make haste on other things; just enjoy and have fun at the moment", but we cannot deny the fact that the future can already be foretold and foreshadowed based on our interests, goals, and principles in life.       After a decade, I would see myself as a registered nurse. I imagine myself walking on the corridors and hallways of the hospital or medical center I am working at, wearing my scrubs with a matching stethoscope on my shoulders and a clipboard and pen on my right hand. I have a nameplate on my uniform that says, "David Aeron Y. Arellano, RN", taking pride in the service and dignity my profession holds. I am serving my patients with the best of my abilities and also helping them with the warmest and most carin...

Strike the Match

Problem here, another problem there. Life would never be complete without one's own set of problems getting in the way. Minor setbacks can be resolved easily with the aid of someone or using the seeds of wisdom you have reaped along your journey. But the real catch here is, what about major inconveniences and impediments? Issues like political injustice, corruption, pollution, and the like are difficult to solve alone. That is where change starts to appear in the big picture. To straighten out tangled knots, change must be instilled. But for us, if hearing the word "change" is enough to make our insides tingle, it will surely turn our intestines upside down when we talk about its entire process. Sure, change is indeed scary and difficult. But let us consider the situation of those victims who are suffering at the abusive and unjust hands of their offenders. Will you raise your voice, take the situation into action, and let "change" turn the tables around, or wil...

Raison d'être

“Which person is the one you look up to the most?" is a question that has been thrown at me a gazillion times already, but my answer would always contain the same person. "My mother." The reason why is simple. Ever since I was an innocent child, my mother has been my mentor, number one supporter, best friend, cook, guidance counselor, seamstress, alarm clock, refuge, superhero and most especially, my anchor. She defined the word "love" in a million little ways I cannot imagine.  She taught me when and how to trust people and how to stand on my own two feet. She also enlightened me with principles and ethics I still observe to this day, opened my eyes, and gave me a glimpse of the various faces our world has, how it truly works, and its realities. She molded me to always find the beauty in any state or position I come across; to become adept in every situation, may it be easy or difficult to surpass through, for life has its own bumps and hills; it will not alwa...

Band-Aids Don't Fix Bullet Holes

In the year 1903, when the Republic of the Philippines was still recovering from the aftermath of the Philippine Revolution and Philippine Insurrection, local workers and laborers finally saw the light of day thanks to the  Union Obrera Democratica de Filipina , the Philippines' first labor organization. The aforementioned group was led by Isabelo de los Reyes, who was born in the Heritage City of Vigan and is remembered as the father of the Philippine labor movement as well as the father of Filipino socialism. Through  Don Belong 's efforts, the country had its first Labor Day celebration, and the rest is history. Labor Day is commemorated annually in our country to celebrate the contributions and hardships of Filipino workers and laborers all around the world. Job fairs, concerts, activities, and celebrations alike are done and conducted around the nation every May 1st, but are these measures undertaken by the government enough to combat economic abuse and discriminatio...

Ti Kinatan-ok ti Maysa a Bigueño

"Coding will never be my thing," was the thought boggling my mind as I passed my test paper in Information and Communications Technology. Grasping our lesson in HTML Lists and Frames was difficult for me since we haven't had the time to master these lessons in application. But even though I had this not-so-good memory of this quarter, the thing that excited me the most was the fulfillment of another culture-infused activity, community-based research that focuses on different categories that you randomly choose by luck and by chance. I was the team leader of City of Vigan II, and the category that I was able to pick was arts and culture, and the rest was history. With my able and proficient teammates, Jericson, Drexel, Ghaveriel, and Ashdeine, we were able to lay out our plans and recommendations for what to do and include in our study. At the end, we decided to do research on the arts and architecture of Vigan.   We started to wander around the city. We asked a lot of bus...

Basking in Her Glory

As soon as I entered the premises of Ilocos Sur National High School, deep down in my heart, I already knew that it would be the perfect place for me to hone my talents and abilities that would cater to my very needs. I know that it will help me discover and expand more of my excellence, exceeding the horizons of mediocrity and reaching definite grandiosity.   The way Ilocos Sur National High School celebrates its High School Day is not new to me because all three of my sisters also chose the aforementioned institution to study at; hence, I sometimes get the chance to witness the school's Foundation Day. Foot parades, field demonstrations, and other activities are conducted to welcome and celebrate another year added to the school's years of existence amidst all the tests of time.   But all the joy and gaiety that I expected that I would also experience turned into dust, vanishing from my clutches and drifting so far away from me that it became impossible to capture it again. ...
